New evidence continues to signal that the number of hungry people in the world is growing, reaching 821 million in 2017 or one in every nine people, according to The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2018 released 11 September 2018.
Food Poverty statistics for Ireland are derived from the Social Inclusion Monitor published by the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection.

Food poverty and financial exclusion emerged as social policy issues in recent years but saw small reductions in 2017. Food poverty (as measured by an enforced lack of one of three food deprivation items) was experienced by 8.7 per cent of the population in 2017, a reduction on the 2016 rate of 9.8 per cent.
