Both businesses and charities must comply with all the relevant food safety guidelines and are both asked to sign agreements to reflect this before they can sign up to FoodCloud.
We have verified that our processes meet with the guidelines provided by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland.

Businesses must only supply food that is within its use by date (where applicable) and has been treated in accordance with food safety legislation.
The charity has the right to refuse food at the point of collection if they do not find that it is suitable for consumption. The charity takes responsibility for the food from the point of collection and for ensuring that the food is treated in accordance with food safety legislation.
All charities registered with FoodCloud should have a Food Safety Management system in place, which should also include food safety training/instruction.
While everyone in FoodCloud is trained in and responsible for food safety, FoodCloud does employ a Food Safety Officer.
Karen McGrane-Capcarrere works with charities and food suppliers as well as the FoodCloud team to ensure that all food safety guidelines are followed and necessary protocols are in place.

The Food Safety Officer is responsible for ensuring that organisations using the FoodCloud system are capable of reaching the food safety requirements.
The role of the food safety officer is to offer support in the area of food safety for FoodCloud’s member organisations.
We do this through engagement and evaluating where support is needed, through the following:
– Supporting member organisations in achieving compliance
– With support from the NSAI we can offer free of charge training on the NSAI IS340 /2007 Hygiene in the Catering Sector programme – a saving of €42
– With support from the FSAI we can offer the Safe Catering Folder, worth €80, free of charge
With support from the Environmental Health Officers Association and the National Hygiene Partnership FoodCloud can offer food safety training Level 1 and 2 to all of our member organisations at a very competitive price.
Training is delivered in each of our Hubs and can also be delivered at the organisations’ own premises for convenience.
Food Safety Legislation states that all food handlers must have food safety training commensurate to their work activities and at FoodCloud we have devised a way of ensuring that this is obtainable for our members.
FoodCloud are fortunate enough to have a selection of food industry representatives that make themselves available to us for guidance and support in the area of policy change and food safety in relation to surplus food use.
This group have supported FoodCloud since the beginning and are an excellent resource given that there are no EU guidelines that address Surplus food redistribution at the moment. The FSAI as part of this group have worked on publishing guidelines to support food businesses in this area.
In 2017 the FSAI published a set of guidelines to support charities, food banks and food donors in the safe donation and use of surplus food.

Please make sure that you are aware of the allergens in the food you are distributing.
When you are collecting and passing on food products you – our charity partner organisation) – are responsible for informing your service users of the possible allergens that may be in the food you are providing.
Where the food is packaged, the allergens will be in the list of ingredients in Bold writing but in the case of unpackaged foods the Allergen information is available from your retailer in store and in the case of some retailers it is available online.
This information is essential for unpackaged food and must be passed onto your service users.
