Community Corner: DCU Student Life  Pantry: Supporting Students, Fighting Food Waste, and Contributing to the SDGs

At DCU Student Life, our mission is to support and represent almost 20,000 students across Dublin City University. Recognising the rising cost-of-living challenges, we introduced The Pantry—a service that offers free, nutritious food and essential groceries, ensuring that no student has to choose between a meal and their education.

Why The Pantry?

Based on an all-student survey, we discovered that many students struggle with food insecurity and long commutes. In response, The Pantry provides convenient access to free staples, fresh produce, and more, creating an immediate impact:

  • 7,000 students supported in the past year
  • 1,320 loaves of bread saved from going to waste
  • 14.5 tonnes of food diverted from landfill in just 12 weeks

This initiative also supports several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including:

  • SDG 2 (Zero Hunger): Improving access to nutritious food
  • SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption & Production): Reducing food waste through surplus redistribution
  • SDG 3 (Good Health & Well-being): Ensuring students can maintain a healthy diet
  • SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals): Collaborating with organisations like FoodCloud

How It Works

The Pantry functions like a small shop stocked entirely with donations and surplus from partners like FoodCloud. By repurposing food that would otherwise go to waste, we’re cutting our environmental footprint while removing financial pressure from students. There’s no means testing—everyone is welcome, and we work to remove any stigma around seeking support.

More Than Just Groceries

In addition to free groceries, we offer:

  • Daily Breakfast (porridge, fruit, tea/coffee)
  • Free Feminine Hygiene Products
  • Free Contraception
  • Campus Microwaves & Free Hot Water

All these measures help students thrive academically and personally. Research shows that food insecurity can negatively affect degree completion and mental wellbeing. By confronting these issues head-on, we aim to build a supportive environment where students can focus on learning without worrying about their next meal.

A Community Effort

The Pantry is run by student staff who bring empathy and enthusiasm to those seeking help. Partnerships with FoodCloud make it all possible. Together, we’re shaping a more inclusive, caring campus culture—one that contributes to global sustainability goals. At DCU Student Life, we believe that no student should have to choose between a meal and their education—and that every step towards reducing waste counts towards a healthier planet for us all.
